Where to see platypus South Australia

Ever wondered where to see Platypus in South Australia? Australia is known for this incredibly strange creature and who doesn’t want to see a wild platypus in Adelaide! To answer the first and very common question of “do we have platypus in Adelaide?” the answer is … “yes but they are very very rare”. So we made this list to help you find them!

River Torrens Platypus

The River Torrens has some local groups including the Friends of the River Torrens Community Group and a Platypus Find working together to re-wild the River Torrens with platypus. So right now you might not see them in there, but hopefully in a few years you will!

Kangaroo Island Platypus Waterhole

In the Rocky River region of Flinders Chase National Park you can see this famous Australian animal icon. They were actually introduced to Kangaroo Island in the 1920s as a safe-haven for threatened species. Now with a keen eye, a lot of patience and some good luck you can hopefully find them in the Platypus Waterholes of Kangaroo Island.

Be sure to go at dusk or evening as they are mainly noctural. You’ll need to be very quite but they can be seen there. In April 2019 more than 30 reported platypus sightings where recorded at the Platypus Waterholes of South Australia.

Platypus Sanctuary

As the platypus is under threat it’s important that we create sanctuaries for them to live safely. Many people are working towards creating safe habitats where this Aussie animal can thrive in the wild but also protected environements.

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is a gorgeous wildlife park in South Australia and is home to a few platypus! They don’t live in a cage or aquarium so you’ll need to be patient and lucky to spot them. They are even thought to be home of the only remaining platypus on South Australia’s mainland so this park is your best bet to see them. They also have koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots and more Australian animals. Purchase you tickets below;
