Whale Watching in South Australia

Looking for the best places to see whales in South Australia? I love whale watching and when in season I’m sure to head on out to South Australia’s gorgeous coastline and try to spot South Australian humpbacks, southern right whales and the rarer sperm whales, pilot whales and orcas.

Victor Harbor Whale Watching

Encounter Marine Park in Victor Harbor is your best bet to see whales in South Australia. Generally the migration starts in May and finishes in October so pack a pair of binoculars. South Australia’s coastline is famous for whale sightings so it’s definitely not rare, be sure to keep an eye out for splashes in the water or burst of water in the distance. If you’re wondering are the whales still at Victor Harbor the answer is 100% yes, you just have to go at the right time of the year.

Port Elliot Whale Watching

Port Elliot is just around the corner from Victor Harbor and also a great spot to see wild whales swimming in South Australia’s waters. The Humpback whales are frequent here and you can also check the Whale Sighting Log to stay up to date on where the latest whales have been seen in SA.

Head of Bight Whale Watching

Head of Bight’s Far West Coast Marine Park is home to more whale sightings than you’d believe. I personally believe it’s probably one of the best places in the world to see wild whales. Off the coast of Ceduna South Australia you overlook the huge cliffs to see these gorgeous creatures swimming in the ocean.

Adelaide Whale Watching Tours

Big Duck Boat Tours is located in Victor Harbor and offers whale watching tours in season. It’s also a great tour to see wild dolphins, wild sea lions and wild fur seals swimming South Australian waters. They have even seen the rare sunfish which I would love to see one day! These tours are affordable and really fun. Grab your camera enjoy your South Australian trip down to Victor Harbor.

Christies Beach Whale Watching

Christies Beach in 2021 was home to a whale that made news as it surprised everyone when it had a calf there! Christies Beach is not known for whale sightings but this mother and calf stayed close to shore for a few days. The two Southern Right Whales were seen slowly swimming around until the baby whale was big enough to make its way further down the south coast.

Blue Whales in South Australia

It’s very rare but the world’s largest animal, the Blue Whale, can actually be found in South Australia! Sometimes feeding offshore off of Kangaroo Island you’ll be lucky to see one. Another spot to see Blue Whales in South Australia is off of Bonney Coast. Best of luck and be sure to post it on Instagram if you do see one.

Where can I see Southern Right Whales?

Southern Right Whales can be seen in the waters of South Australia but your best bests are at the Head of Bight in Ceduna and at Victor Harbor. The Nullarbor has over 100 Southern Right Whales seen annually between June and October. Bring some binoculars and bring some snacks as it’s a long road trip from Adelaide.

South Australian Whale Centre

If you’re a fan of whales (which I’m sure you are) then I recommend visiting the South Australian Whale Centre). This place offers great entertainment regarding whale facts and information of South Australia’s whale migrations.
